What is the Purpose of an Index?

An index is more than simply a list of key words. A good index provides an intellectual map which guides the reader, allowing them quickly and simply to access the information within and- equally importantly- elucidating and clarifying the structure of the book to the reader.

Without an index, a book is only of limited use for its primary purpose- a reader simply has no means of finding information on any but the broadest topics (whether for simple reference, or for more specific purposes such as academic citation) by any means except a laborious page-by-page trawl.

A good index can provide more than a keyword or automated search is ever able to- it can also guide the reader toward relevant information if they are unsure of terminology and provide deeper insight into the structure and themes of a work.

Indexing Services

A Society of Indexers Accredited Indexer (AI) since 2007, I have indexed well over 100 books for major publishers, professional and charitable organisations and private individuals, as well as having participated in several collaborative indexing exercises on large reference works and similar projects.

I chiefly provide indexing services for academic and general interest books, but will consider other publications (journals, manuals, encyclopaedias, business and conference reports etc.), as well as XML embedded indexing for electronic documents. I prefer to charge on a 'per page' basis and am therefore happy to take on projects of any length, time permitting.

To get a rough idea of how much it will cost to index your publication please click on the rates link above- feel free to contact me via email or phone for a quote.
